Pompeii

No need to rush this morning to catch any ferry boats...we took the train instead. Today's destination: Pompeii. This archaeological site was very accessible by the local Circumvesuviana train system. The train was a bit crowded as it was around 9:30 a.m. We made it to Pompeii in just under an hour and gained access to the site with the entry fee of 18 Euros.

Once a thriving and sophisticated Roman city, Pompeii was buried under metres of ash and pumice after the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. The preserved site features excavated ruins of streets and houses that we were able to freely explore. There was an option to do a guided tour for double the price, but not really my jam. The tours are too slow, too crowded and you can't always hear the guide. Personally, I like going at my own pace. I have been here before so I vaguely remember the highlights that were of interest.

Walking around on uneven terrain could be a challenge for some, be sure to have good footwear for this excursion. We saw some people pushing a stroller...probably not the most comfortable ride for the child inside! People with mobility issues also might find this difficult. Even able-bodied people could trip up on the giant cobblestones and rocks. Watch your step!

We walked for about 2 hours inside and noticed the crowds got larger as the day went on. Pompeii is actually closer to Napoli and there were a few cruise ships (Princess and Viking Cruises) in port and passengers doing excursions from the ship. Once we exited the site, there were many vendors set up selling traditional souvenirs. Keep in mind, bartering is always an option. The first price is not always the real price. I enjoyed doing this today. We went for lunch at a nearby restaurant. It was nice to sit outside in the shade and enjoy some yummy pasta (again...)

Train back to Sorrento was quicker...only about 40 minutes, then time to retreat in our apartment. Relax. Cocktail. Balcony....repeat!
