Path of the Gods

We may have just saved the best for last. The Path of the Gods was our destination for our hiking day. The Path of the Gods (Sentiero Degli Dei) hiking trail skirts the peaks above the Amalfi Coast, and rewarded us with spectacular bird’s-eye views of the coastline and Mediterranean Sea far below. The sweeping panoramas and lofty position inspired the trail’s poetic name. What an incredible experience.

But let me backtrack a bit. Getting to the trail head took a few extra steps. We took the bus nice and early this morning from Sorrento to Amalfi which took 1 hour 30 minutes. Then we needed to connect to another bus that would take us to Agerola. We had arrived to Amalfi on time but we only had 5 minutes to make the connection but luckily our driver pulled in directly beside the bus we needed to board - so no worries!

We had purchased a 24 hour unlimited SITA bus ticket for 10 Euros which was very convenient. I actually purchased them the night before so there would be no concern about not having a ticket with such an early departure. We had arrived to the bus/train station in Sorrento first thing in the morning - and by early, I mean 6:00 a.m. We scored the front seat!

Everyone on the Agerola bus were fellow hikers going to the same spot. You definitely need proper footwear, sun protection, water and snacks for this excursion - we had all of the above. The hike was about 7 km ending in the town of Nocelle. The trail itself does have a varied terrain of large rocks, loose gravel and smooth sandy sections - all well travelled. The views were spectacular. I have seen a lot of cool places throughout my travels, and this definitely ranks high on the list.

Once you have reached Nocelle (the end of the trail), you can either take a bus back down the rest of the way to Positano or simply take the stairs. My mom decided she wanted to take the stairs...so we did. The stairs...all 1800 of them! We took our time. We did it! In total the hike took us just under 3 hours. The stairs were just over an hour.

Once back to Positano we hopped on the SITA bus for the return journey to Sorrento. The apartment balcony was calling...it was time for a well deserved cocktail with the feet up! (Not gonna lie, I probably could have iced the knees!) Going down all those stairs was probably the most challenging part of the day. Oh well, the knee discomfort was temporary - the experience will last forever.
